What is oat fibre?

Oat fibre is an insoluble fibre derived from the oat plant by grinding the oat hull, or the protective seed coating of the oat kernel. Oat fibre has high percentage of non-starch polysaccharides, which form small fibre in the digestive tract. That makes it a rich source of dietary fire, most of which is insoluble.

When making oat fibre, most suppliers grind out all the non-digestible oat hull to create a low-carb / keto friendly substitute for baked goods. It has the ability to absorb a significant amount of water - in fact, up to 7 times it's weight! This helps bulk up many different recipes.

Does it taste like oats?

It depends on where you buy the oat fibre from. The Groovy Keto brand of oat fibre is 100% pure oat fibre, odourless and tasteless. You can be confident that when adding this to your keto baking recipes, it won't effect or spoil the taste.

Our oat fibre has been processed so that almost all non-fibre components, fats and carbohydrates have been removed. Unlike other brands of oat fibre, which have a mild taste of oats and have more protein an fat.

Is Oat Fibre good for you?

Oat fibre is great for keto! Firstly, the carbohydrate content of our oat fibre is virtually none. The bulk of the calories are made up of high levels of natural insoluble fibre (Up to 90%)! Oat fibre also helps with digestion, losing weight and lowering cholesterol. It's great for keto baking too. Did you know that our keto bread uses oat fibre? Our famous Groovy Keto Mug Cake Mix also uses oat fibre!

The alternatives to oat fibre

Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husk has the same binding properties as fibre oat, and can be used as a direct replacement. This is also an excellent binding agent that fulfils texture similar to that of bread.

Ground Flaxseeds

Ground flaxseed also do a great job of binding ingredients together and replacing gluten by adding moisture and softness to your keto baking products.

Xanthan Gum

This is a great replacement for oat fibre. It has the same binding properties, but you require less of it. Groovy Keto has it's very own brand of xantham gum.
